Podcast Episode Summary
I talk candidly about my own experience hitting a wall after months of high-intensity training and weightlifting. The problem wasn’t discipline or effort. It was ignoring nutrition and supplementation — and that mistake led to burnout instead of progress.
I also address one of the most common mistakes men make: responding to low energy or weight gain by simply training harder. More intensity isn’t always the answer. Sometimes the missing pieces are recovery, sleep, nutrition, or unaddressed deficiencies. Exercise alone can only take you so far if the rest of the system isn’t supporting it.
This podcast is about the big picture. Yes, we’ll talk about strength training — and how to do it intelligently after 50. But we’ll also dive into simple, practical nutrition that supports your body without turning meals into a second job. And we’ll cut through the noise around supplements to focus on what actually helps with energy, strength, and recovery. Strength, diet, and supplementation for men after 50.
If you’re a man over 50 who wants to feel stronger, clearer, and more energized again — you’re in the right place. I’m glad you’re here.

Hi, welcome to the Vitality After Fifty for Men podcast where we talk about strength, energy, nutrition, and what actually works for men over 50. I'm Dale G. I'll be right back.
Dale G
Welcome once again to Vitality After Fifty for Men. I'm Dale G, and I'm from My Vitality Reboot. In this first episode, which I'm so excited about, I've been prepping for this for a while, right? I want to set the foundation here for what this podcast, Vitality After 50 for Men, is all about. You're going to find YouTube channels out there, you're going to find social media pages and groups and even podcasts that are all about strength training.
And although lifting weights and I lift weights. It may be a part of the solution to gaining vitality as we get older. It's just one piece of the puzzle. Vitality, energy, confidence in how we look and feel after 50 isn't just about lifting weights, or isn't just about exercise, actually. But it is one part of the picture, but but just one part. Okay? Give you an example. So if you have a bloated belly, you know, belly fat, love handles, you know.
Listen, you could lift like Arnold Schwarzenegger and it's not gonna make your pants fit better. You know, I know because I've tried it. So a lot of what you're going to hear from me is experience that I've been through and I've tried different things and some things worked, some things didn't. And I'm gonna tell you what I did find that worked and didn't. So I I know that just exercising like a madman is not gonna fix the problem at this age.
20 or 30, maybe it it would help, right? But but not at this age. What it did for me, going hard in the gym, is it led to burnout both physically and mentally, and me not getting the results that I was looking for. So what I've learned is that real vitality after 50 comes from a system. It's a little system. And when I say the word system, don't, you know, go, my gosh, I gotta learn and do a bunch of different things. No, it's really, really simple, but you do have to pay attention to a a few things, not just getting in the
Gym and lifting weights, right? So the system has three parts. There's first of all movement and strength. Movement and strength. So there is exercise as part of this system, right? You've got to move your body. Things that are in motion stay in motion. Things that are not in motion are just not in motion, right? So you've got to move your body in some way. Now you can go into the gym and do strength training, and I do believe that some strength training, and I I I love it right so I I do the majority of my exercise is strength training.
But you don't have to be that way. You know, there's guys I know that are runners, right? They like to run. Running for me at this age, I'm sixty-nine by the way, just isn't going to fly, right? It's gonna hurt my knees more than they need to be hurt. So that might not that might not be the case for you. So you might be a runner, you might be a hiker, you might be a biker, right? Which is fine. So movement and some strength training. And for those of us that love to lift, get in the gym and do that, but also, you know, maybe a little bit of HIIT training and and I'll get into details on that as well. So that's part of it. That's part one.
Part one's gonna help, but part one is not gonna solve the problem. You've got to also talk about nutrition. Now, my wife told me not to say diet, right? Because she didn't want you to think that I was telling you y'all have to go on a diet. I'm certainly not on a diet. So let's talk about nutrition. Nutrition's a big, big part of it. so we're gonna get in and talk a little bit about nutrition today as well. So you've i in most cases, for most men over 50, 60, 70, you've got to change a little bit of what you're eating, right? And I'll get into detail on that.
And then the third thing, which I totally missed the boat on, and I don't know why, because I've I've used supplements on my life, vitamins, minerals, things like that, right? But I missed the boat on supplements when I was doing these heavy workouts. But smart, smart supplementation is a big, big part of it. Now, when one of those three things is missed.
We aren't gonna get the maximum benefit benefit from the other two. Those three things work in conjunction with each other, and we've got to put them all together. Otherwise, our results are gonna be less than what we want. Okay, so the reason this matters is really, really simple.
And and the reason why it matters now more than 30 years ago, 20 years ago, 10 years ago, is because as men get older, and yes, women too, but we're we're focusing on on men. I think there's a lot of a lot of information for women out there. But as men get older, it's not just muscle that changes. Now, certainly muscle is a big, big part of it, so it's harder to add muscle and it's harder to maintain muscle as you get older, right? So that's that's that.
But our overall metabolism slows down. Our hormone production, like testosterone, as an example, slows down. Digestion isn't what it used to be. So nutrients don't get absorbed like they used to, right? So you can work out consistently, but with and which is what I did, and but without paying attention to nutrition and supplementation, you might just end up feeling tired and having even less energy. And that's what happened to me. I hit a wall, right? You can you can eat pretty well, like I was.
Still not feel like yourself, and that's where you get frustrated. And I was frustrated because you're putting in the effort. I was putting in a ton of effort, but I wasn't getting the results. I was working in the gym doing HIIT training, high intensity interval training, and we can talk about that. I was lifting weights. I did it for about five months, and I just, as I said before, I just hit a wall mentally and physically. I would got up the next that one morning and I went, What am I doing here?
Because I just looked in the mirror, and I don't look any better than I did five months ago. Like, that's not what I'm doing, I'm working so hard for, right? And I later learned it was because I hadn't changed my nutrition and I paid no attention to supplementation. So those three things, okay. Now, a common mistake that a lot of guys make is most people they default to exercise as the main solution. So when they you know look in the mirror, or you know, maybe they're getting ready for their daughters wedding or their granddaughter's wedding or whatever event, right?
Whatever the trigger is to say, ooh, geez, you know, I need to look better. Okay. It's I need to exercise. And yes, exercise is a component, right? And that's why you see so much on social media, so much on YouTube about working out. And don't get me wrong, I'm in the gym five or six days a week. It's super important. But what most people do is that if energy is low, they train hard.
They think, you know, I don't have the energy that I want to have. I don't have the energy that I thought I should have. So they train even harder.
And if their weight goes up, they try to move more, right? The answer seems to be exercise all the time. If they feel sluggish, they put in more intensity. The answer seems to be exercise movement, right? And and often that's not the full answer, and actually that's even not an unhealthy answer, right? because again, sometimes miss the missing piece is the recovery part of it. Sometimes it's sleep. Sleep is huge and I struggle.
With that. So if you struggle with sleep, keep coming back because I'm going to have some more information for you about sleep. And my sleep habits are improving. My sleep time is improving. I've got a Fitbit and it it clocks the deep sleep time that I have. And wow, last week it went up by over an hour. So I've got some good tips for you.
Sometimes it's nutrition, and sometimes it's deficiencies that haven't been addressed. And when those pieces are ignored, exercise can actually be a bad thing. So we've got to look at the full picture.
This podcast is about the full picture. And yes, we'll talk about strength training. We're going to talk about how to do it effectively after 50, safely after 50, the right way to lift weights. But we're also going to talk about nutrition. Simple, practical nutrition that actually supports your body. And when I say simple, I mean super simple. I'm not a guy that likes to cook and make meals into a thing, right? I I eat out of necessity. If I didn't have to eat, I wouldn't. It's just to me, it's like you know, and you might be going, Wow, I love to cook, I love to barbecue barbecue. Good for you, then that's gonna help the nutrition part, that's gonna make it super easy for you.
Okay. we're also gonna talk about supplementation. We're not gonna talk about you know, hype and biohacking and trends and all that stuff, just some really simple things that every guy over 50 that wants to look and feel better should be taking. Okay. So, again, we're just going to talk about what actually helps support energy strength and recovery, some bare bones stuff, but all three matter and they work together. So, if this type of content interests you and you want to catch the next episode, make sure you subscribe to this podcast and you turn on the notifications because I hope to do this. So we're gonna break it all down in a practical way in future podcasts we're gonna talk about simple strength strategies right and I've got a lot of them. I've done a lot of homework on this I've done online programs.
I went to Vince's V Shred program. I've done those things, right? And I'm gonna share with you the good parts of that program and the thing that's things that didn't work for me at this age.
Again, I'm 69. Now this podcast is being recorded on May 14th, 2026. In three days on the 17th, I turned 69. So I'm telling you I'm 69, three days ahead of time, right? So just I'll tell you that to get so you can gauge based on your age, right? So the V Shred program. Great program if you're 30 or 35. But when you're 65, 60, you know, it's like whoa, a grind, right?
