Low Energy in Men Over50

Low Energy in Men Over 50
(And Why “More Exercise” Isn’t the Answer)

Low Energy in Men Over 50

I want to start this by saying something that may sound familiar.

I was working out.
I was eating what I thought was “right.”
I was staying active, walking regularly, biking, and getting to the gym.

And yet—I still felt flat.

Not exhausted, not sick… just off.
My energy wasn’t where it should have been, my belly fat wasn’t budging, I wasn't losing weight, and I kept wondering why the effort I was putting in didn’t seem to match the results I was getting.

If you’re a man over 50 and you’ve ever thought, “I’m doing the work—why don’t I feel better?”—this post is for you.

Something Had to Change

I started to wonder if this was just my age.
Maybe this was simply how it worked now.
Maybe life had caught up with me, and feeling strong and energized like I used to was no longer realistic.

I got discouraged.

Then something happened that taught me an important lesson—or more accurately, reminded me of something I had forgotten.

I was asked to emcee an event for a company a friend and colleague had recently started. As I introduced several doctors, nutritionists, and the product formulator, I listened closely as they explained what their products were doing for people—especially for those of us over 50.

What stood out to me that weekend wasn’t hype or big promises. It was a consistent message I kept hearing from professionals who understood the aging body.

After 50, working harder is rarely the answer

One thing came through loud and clear:
for low energy in men over 50, more exercise is not the solution.

In fact, pushing harder is often exactly what keeps us stuck—tired, sore, frustrated, and wondering why our efforts aren’t paying off anymore.

That hit home.

Because what finally made the difference for me wasn’t adding more workouts or tightening the screws on discipline.

It was changing how I supported my body—through diet and supplementation—while continuing to do the activity I already enjoyed.

And the results came quickly.

In less than three weeks:

  • My belly flattened noticeably
  • My weight dropped by about 8 pounds
  • My energy became more consistent throughout the day

Not from pushing harder—but from working smarter.

Let me explain what changed.

What I Changed With My Diet

This is where things really started to shift.

For a long time, I thought I was eating “right.” I wasn’t living on junk food, I wasn’t overeating, and I was generally mindful of what I put in my body. But what I wasn’t doing was eating intentionally for where my body is now.

After 50, your body doesn’t respond the same way it used to. And at my age (68), it's even more true. It’s not just about calories or cutting things out—it’s about giving your body the raw materials it needs to recover, regulate energy, and function efficiently.

Here’s what I changed.

I stopped eating before my morning workouts. I worked out while fasting from the night before. This extends fasting time to about 14 hours.

Breakfast - When I get home from the gym I have a whey protein shake and 2 hard boilded eggs (more protein).

Lunch - I have a cooked chicken breast (protein) with the veggie of the day (broccoli, cauliflower, string beans, etc). I buy 2 packages of sliced chicken breasts and cook them ahead of time. I put them in a container in the fridge so they are ready to go for my lunches. If you work at an office just take lunch to work with you. Make lunch the biggest meal of the day.

Easy Recipe for Cooking Chicken Breasts

Preheat oven to 400 degrees
Line a baking pan with foil
Add olive oil (or non-nut oil of choice) to both sides of the breasts
Add spices of your choice (I use salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika, oregano) to both sides.
Bake for 18-22 minutes
Remove from oven and let cool to room temperature
If you like (I don't) add BBQ sauce, Teriyaki, Salsa. Hot sauce
Package in an air tight container and put in the fridge.

An increase in protein can help your energy and keep you from snacking

Dinner - I eat more protein. Beef, liver, pork, etc. along with a green vegetable.

Just as Important is What I Eliminated from my Diet

I was eating protein bars as a healthy snack between meals. I stopped snacking completely. I learned that snacking, even healthy snacks, spikes glucose levels and doesn't allow your digestive system to rest. This is key for low energy in men over 50.

You might think that I got hungry between meals without my "healthy" protein bars. At first, I did. But after just a few days that went away because I was eating more protein which filled me up.

What surprised me most wasn’t how hard this was—it wasn’t. The changes were simple and sustainable. But the impact was anything but small.

Within a short period of time, I noticed:

  • Less bloating
  • A flatter midsection
  • More stable energy throughout the day
  • Better recovery from workouts

And maybe most importantly, I didn’t feel deprived or run down. I felt supported.

This wasn’t about restriction.
It was about alignment—eating in a way that actually matched my age, activity level, and goals.

Balance Matters Too

My wife and I go out to dinner about once a week. We have five local restaurants we rotate between, and when we go, we make generally healthy choices—but we also enjoy ourselves. That usually includes two or three beers with dinner.

And that’s intentional.

That weekly night out matters to us. Neither of us has to cook, we get to slow down, and we spend relaxed, quality time together. It’s something we genuinely look forward to every week.

For me, this is an important part of staying consistent. Progress doesn’t come from being perfect—it comes from having a plan that works in real life. Enjoying a meal, a drink, and good conversation isn’t a setback. It’s part of what makes the rest of the week sustainable.

Supporting Energy and Recovery Beyond Food

Dialing in my diet made a noticeable difference, but it also made something else very clear.

Even when you eat well, life after 50, 60 and 70 still places real demands on your body. I work long days, stay mentally engaged, and still expect my body to perform in the gym and recover well afterward. Food is the foundation—but for me, it wasn’t the whole picture.

That’s where supplementation became important.

Not as a shortcut.
Not as a replacement for real food.
But as support for energy, recovery, and consistency.

I started being more intentional about the supplements I use and, just as importantly, why I use them.

The Supplements I Use and Why I Use Them

Once I had my diet dialed in, I added a small number of targeted supplements to support the demands of my schedule, my workouts, and how I want to look and feel as I get older.

I’m not chasing extremes. I’m supporting consistency.

Here’s what I take, how each one fits into my daily life and improves low energy in men over 50.

Beneve Luxe Collagen

As we age, collagen production naturally declines, and you feel it—in your joints, your skin, and your recovery.

Luxe Collagen supports:

  • Joint comfort and mobility, especially with regular workouts
  • Skin, hair, and nails, which matter more than we often admit
  • Overall tissue support, which helps me stay active without feeling beat up

For me, this is about moving well and aging well, not just performance.

Beneve Electrolytes

I use electrolytes during gym workouts, biking, and hiking.

This isn’t about endurance sports—it’s about hydration that actually works.

Electrolytes support:

  • Better hydration during and after activity
  • More consistent energy during workouts
  • Less fatigue and fewer “off” days when I stay active

Especially after 50, hydration isn’t just about water—it’s about balance.

Beneve BUILD (Creatine + Calcium)

BUILD supports strength and muscle function, which becomes increasingly important as we age.

I use BUILD to support:

  • Lean muscle and strength from my workouts
  • Better performance in the gym without overtraining
  • Bone health and long-term durability

Maintaining muscle isn’t about looking jacked—it’s about metabolism, strength, and staying capable.

Beneve Xcelerate G3 (Gut Health)

This was one of the more important additions for me.

Gut health affects far more than digestion—it impacts energy, inflammation, and even body composition.

Xcelerate G3 supports:

  • Digestion and nutrient absorption
  • Reduced bloating and better midsection comfort
  • A healthier internal environment for fat loss and energy

When your gut is off, everything feels harder. When it’s working well, progress feels easier.

Beneve SURGE (Amino Acids)

SURGE supports recovery and muscle maintenance, especially when staying active consistently.

I use it to support:

  • Workout recovery
  • Muscle preservation while losing weight
  • Energy during training without stimulants

This helps me train, recover, and stay consistent—without feeling run down.

How This Fits Together

None of these supplements are magic on their own.

But combined with:

  • Better nutrition
  • Regular movement
  • Reasonable workouts
  • Real recovery

They support the lifestyle I want—one where I can stay active, leaner, energized, and confident as I age.

The Bigger Takeaway - Low Energy in Men Over 50

If there’s one thing I’ve learned through this process, it’s this:

Feeling tired, flat, or stuck after 50 doesn’t mean you’re broken—and it doesn’t mean you need to work harder.

In many cases, it means your body needs better support.

For me, the combination of more intentional nutrition, targeted supplementation, and activity I actually enjoy changed everything. My energy improved. My belly flattened. The scale moved in the right direction. And just as important, I felt more consistent—physically and mentally—throughout the day. I also looked better in my clothes 🙂

None of this required extreme workouts or deprivation. It required alignment.

And that’s what I want other men over 50, 60 and 70 to understand:
you don’t have to push harder to feel better—you have to support your body smarter.
